The Poodle: Versatility Par Excellence

Most dogs can excel at something, but few breeds can Do It All! Welcome to the world of the Poodle. Few, if any, other breeds can attest to such versatility. Inside, they hold the ability and willingness to be and do anything we ask of them, from beloved companion to hard working assistant or competitive partner. Outside, Poodles come in packages of all sizes and colors with hair that can be styled to suit any fancy.
Well known as one of the most intelligent of dogs, and with long standing popularity, the breed has nonetheless aquired a stigma as a talentless, fru-fru pet. This is mostly due to the public view of primped-out show dog haircuts. But even that style has purpose - the pattern was developed specifically to enhace the Poodle's ability as a hunting water retriever, keeping lungs and joints warm, while unhindering the legs for swimming. The modern clip is of course a much exaggerated version of this, but the history is unchanged. Remember the old saying; don't judge a book by it's cover. (A cover which, by the way, most of us have grown to appreciate and find beautiful, if high maintenance. ;-)
With the cooperation of many breeders and owners, I have compiled this footage of Poodles showing just how capable they are of so many jobs. Even this list is not exhaustive - there are several more things the breed can do - I have yet to find an activity which is beyond the scope of the Poodle's abilities.
